The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump plans to expand oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico region. However, standing in the way of this plan is an extremely rare whale species—the Rice’s whale.
This whale was recognized as a distinct species in 2021 and is one of the rarest whales on Earth. They inhabit only a specific region of the Gulf of Mexico.
