    What happened:

Joymala, the legendary patrol elephant of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, died at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness. She had served the park for 34 years (1992–2026), taking part in anti-poaching patrols, wildlife monitoring, rescue operations, and forest protection.

Where and When did it happen:

Joymala died on 4 July 2026 in the Naloni area of Agoratoli Range in Kaziranga, Assam. She was given a ceremonial guard of honour by forest officials during her last rites.

    Why this is important:

Joymala became internationally famous in 2004 when a tiger leapt over her during a forest patrol, creating one of Kaziranga's most iconic wildlife photographs.
