India's Parliament passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026. Lok Sabha approved it on March 23-24 by voice vote, despite opposition calls for review and wider consultations.

The bill narrows the definition of transgender persons to biological or socio-cultural cases like hijra, excluding self-perceived identities, and requires medical board certification. Critics say it overrides self-ID rights and lacks community input; it awaits President's assent.
